acoustamaniacs @ sidewalk stroll - august

the acoustamaniacs at the third Sidewalk Stroll Arts Festival in Downtown Huntsvegas. they attracted quite a lot of people by being on a busy street corner, and they made $11 that night, as people would instinctively drop money in their guitar cases. and in a strange similarity to panoply, they attracted many middle-aged women and small children.

late afternoon thunderheads forming across from my front porch. as you can tell from the direction of the sunlight, these were south of my house, so as close as they seem, they never reached us. this summer we've lucky to get any rain at all, let alone regular afternoon thunderstorms. so it's been kinda hot, dry, & dusty lately, yet curiously humid at the same time? welcome to alabama.

water tupelo trees (Nyssa aquatica) in a swampy area of the Hays Preserve. the wide base of the tree is called a "spreading buttress." at least that's what the little sign said. the bright green in the background is the Hampton Cove Golf Course, where indiginous species of upper-middle class suburbanites (H. sapiens hamptoncovus) can be found roaming the fairways.

this was taken a while back, at my house after a storm came through. these are mammatus clouds, and i'd previously only seen them during or before a big storm. it was very pretty, though, with the sunset and everything. yeah.

one morning i randomly woke up at sunrise (i think i had to go to the bathroom or something), and i looked out the window. and here these thunderheads were, just hanging out off the coast. so i took a picture. and then i crawled back in bed and slept for 3 or 4 more hours.

it's a little hard to tell from this image, but the sky was crazy cool that day. at least i thought so. btw, this was taken at the Canaveral National Seashore. the government always snatches up the prettiest places. i guess that's a good thing. :c) at the south end of the beach, you can see the shuttle on the launch pad. at the north end--there's a lot of old, naked people. i know you didn't want to know that, but neither did i, so everyone gets to suffer.

this is the delta rocket launch from june, as seen from cocoa beach. they couldn't have hoped for a clearer florida afternoon than there was that day. my little camera was (amazingly) able to register the blue-colored band on the rocket, and we think we even saw the boosters falling away after separation. very cool. btw, the rocket was carrying an "experimental" satellite, which probably translates to "spy satellite"...

on nice days, i sit on a small set of steps beneath this emblazonment. it is actually the outside of the secret stairwell. on the first floor, the secret lobby of the secret stairwell has an emergency exit to the steps on which i sit. there are a few more secret exits i discovered on the other side of the fish which i will be sure to photograph sometime later. btw, it's actually pronounced "SAL-mon", not like the fish, but oh well.

this is final shot from fanland for a while...at least until "this old world start getting me down / And people are just too much for me to face". or until it's warmer, and i have more time. :c) of course, the only "hustling crowds" at UAH are around Morton Hall, the parking lot of which you can find some "rat-race noise down in the streets". other than that, it's a pretty peaceful campus.

i found this mickey head shortly after i saw one on a fan. the time before this, i found a plastic half of a mickey-head-shaped box. someone else found it, too, and decided to leave their mark. i came back later, and the mickey heads were smudged and scourged, presumably by maintenance men. boy, when they say sharpies are indelible, they really mean it!! :c)

you know, my car reminds me of a greenhouse. except, it's more like a solar oven. the dark paint (that which is still there) and the dark interior collect the heat; then the heat is trapped by the glass. so in the summertime, it feels like my skin is going to melt off, and in the winter it feels...toasty. :c)

rust and sky. so opposite, yet so similar. the colors of both are caused by oxygen. the metal is turned red by oxidation, and the sky is turned blue by the oxygen (& nitrogen) in the atmosphere scattering the blue lightwaves.

i suddenly got a yen for old video games one day. i found myself wanting to play donkey kong country and super mario world and other games i used to play back in the day. so i downloaded an SNES emulator. then i remembered a great game we used to play on the sega genesis called streets of rage 2. so i downloaded a genesis emulator. my favorite character is max because he can kill enemies with one swing of a pipe. :c)

my grandaddy grows gourds, dries them out, and turns them into houses for purple martins. each year, the gourds take over the fence; and when they get too heavy, he rigs up little "seats" from wooden planks and rope to alleviate the pressure. it's very cute.

the old and the new maybe? the rocket is a full size replica of the Saturn V that carried astronauts to the moon. it's located at the US Space and Rocket Center, home of Space Camp. there probably won't be any more windshield pictures for a while because of the "yellow snow." as i sit here on the deck, i'm watching the pollen collect on my laptop as i type. there's a thin film of it everywhere these spring days.

this is my cousin (mom's cousin's daughter?) Autumn. she's almost 8 and quite a character. we had lunch at the Old Location Greenbrier Restaurant. there are actually 2 Greenbrier BBQ restaurants (within 3 miles of each other), but it's a complex story. their hushpuppies are heaven in a plastic basket. 'course they'll keep visiting you even after you eat them. which isn't necessarily a bad thing...

taken thru a car window (hence the reflections). one of the cool things about huntsville is random cotton/soy fields just outside the city limits. heck, there's even random fields in the middle of the city. sure, they'll probably be developed eventually, but for now, it's nice seeing red dirt that's not caked onto the dogs' feet.

well, i'm starting another blog. i'm hoping it will become a photoblog. i don't know if i'll have time in the future to actually update it, but oh well. i can do something impulsive once in a while. can't i?
